Introduction

Hey there! By day, I'm a 7th grade science teacher in New Hampshire. By afternoon, I can be found teaching a course at UNH, going to a Mac Users meeting, or creating web pages and podcasts with students. By night, I'm . . . well, the same person. Were you expecting something else?

I started to learn more about the Web 2.0 tools at NECC and am looking forward to experimenting, then integrating what I can in my classroom. This all seems a bit overwhelming right now, but I hope it will all make sense as I start this new adventure!

Why do you want to learn to webcast?

I have two primary reasons at the moment. First, I am a life-long learner. I enjoy learning new things and then passing on what I learn to others. I usually have some sort of teachers' support group running each year. Webcasting would widen the group, enable more to "attend" and broaden our perspectives in the field of education.

Secondly, I have two special connections in two different places, Antarctica and Belize. One of my colleagues, travels every other year to Antarctica to work with a research team. We are finally at a place where we think the powers that be at McMurdo (and NSF) will allow her to Skype to our classroom. In the past, she has contacted us by phone, but it would be easier if we could Skype. How exciting would it be to be able to webcast and allow for a larger audience than our school and talk with the other scientists?

I teach an education course at the Univ. of NH which brings teachers to Belize during our February break. I've been doing this for 18 years and have made some special connections with schools and educators in the rural Toledo District. Even though there are still schools with no electricity, teachers can come to the district education office to access the internet. This February, I'd like to explore the possibility of extending the connections virtually.

I've already talked with the teacher who goes to Antarctica. She would be willing to share her past experiences, answer questions and help with lesson plans for the classroom. I've been her liaison while she's been "down under" and can share how we used the internet to archive and enhance the experience.
