Well, I'll be...... I moved for a reference, and lost what I had written here. Again.....
Jeff the Boss has suggested I describe how I seem to have made a reasonable recording of a two-ended conversation without using the audio repeater.
My vital statistics are:
PC/ Windows XP Pro/Two-sided conversation on Skype/ Recorded with Audacity - setting stereo mix, recording volume in the middle - a little too high for the person I was interviewing/ Logitech USB micro (I don't know what my partner was using, but almost certainly the same). What else is relevant? Sound card: Realtek AC 97 (I think that's the sound card..)
You can pick up a link to the audio recording at:

I was interviewing Gavin Dudeney about TEFL, Business English and Second Life. Gavin also made a couple of videos with Camtasia and there are links to those as well as to the audio interview.

Thanks for the info Dennis. A couple of other questions.
What are your your skype settings for microphone in (tools / options / audio settings)?
Also, what are your settings Sound playback and Recording in the Audio and Voice tabs of Control Panel/ Sounds & Audio Devices ?
If there's any chance you could post a screenshot like this, that would be great.

I didn't fully answer the question, and posted the wrong screenshot. I was asked:
"What are your your skype settings for microphone in (tools / options / audio settings)?"
Le voila:
